Counselling for Grief in Richmond

Understanding Grief

When we think about grief, we often picture it as something to “get over” or move through, a task to complete so life can return to “normal.”

But grief is not something to overcome; it’s a living story our heart keeps learning to tell, shaping who we are and how we love.

Megan Devine reminds us, “grief isn’t a problem to be solved; it’s an experience to be tended. It’s a natural and human response to loss, to loving someone or something deeply and then having that connection changed or taken away.”

Grief can touch every part of us, our body, emotions, thoughts, and sense of meaning. It can feel heavy, confusing, or even endless at times. And yet, nothing about grief means you are broken. You’re simply learning how to live in a world that has changed, carrying both your love and your loss.

There’s no timeline or “right way” to grieve. Healing doesn’t mean forgetting or moving on; it means finding new ways to hold what’s been lost, while staying open to moments of connection and tenderness that still exist around you. As Megan Devine says, some things cannot be fixed, they can only be carried.

Grief asks for gentleness, patience, and companionship, a space where your pain can be witnessed and your love honoured, just as it is.

Nelson Counselling About Image

My Approach

My approach is gentle and calm. I create a warm, safe, and non-judgmental space that allows you to bring and explore whatever you feel comfortable with. I tailor my approach to your specific needs and you will decide the pace that works best for you.

I believe that the counseling process is not about providing answers, but rather about collaboratively uncovering the answers that already exist within you. It's a journey of self-exploration, helping to unravel the intricacies of thoughts and emotions, and shining a light on the unseen aspects of your inner world.

I will support you in understanding what might lie underneath your difficulties and together we will identify strategies to help you  move forward.
Your challenges can become opportunities for growth, an opportunity to journey towards self-acceptance. My intention is to create a space for you where  you can find this acceptance and cultivate a relationship with yourself where all parts of you are welcomed, understood and allowed to be there.

If you resonate with my approach and find yourself  grappling with a challenging situation, persistent unhelpful behavior patterns, trauma, depression, ongoing anxiety, or a feeling of inner imbalance, engaging in  counseling could be a valuable step toward improving your well-being.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I welcome a 15 minute free phone conversation, which allows us to connect and for you to determine whether you feel comfortable to engage with me.
