Counselling for Depression in Richmond

Understanding Depression

When we hear the word depression, we often think of sadness, lack of motivation, or losing interest in things we once enjoyed. And while those are part of it, depression is often much deeper than that.

It can be the body and mind’s way of protecting us from pain that once felt too heavy to face. Sometimes it’s connected to loss, trauma, or ongoing stress. At other times, it can stem from what didn’t happen - the love, safety, or connection we longed for but didn’t receive.

As Dr. Gabor Maté says, “Depression is not a sign of weakness, but a sign that we’ve been strong for too long.” It’s the body’s gentle signal that something inside needs care, attention, and understanding.

Healing from depression isn’t about forcing yourself to “feel happy.” It’s about reconnecting with yourself - learning to listen to what your mind and body are trying to express, and responding with patience and compassion. Over time, as you create more safety and support in your life, small moments of meaning, hope, and connection begin to return.

Recovery unfolds slowly, in its own rhythm. Each step you take - no matter how small - is a step toward greater balance, self-kindness, and inner strength.

Nelson Counselling About Image

My Approach

My approach is gentle and calm. I create a warm, safe, and non-judgmental space that allows you to bring and explore whatever you feel comfortable with. I tailor my approach to your specific needs and you will decide the pace that works best for you.

I believe that the counseling process is not about providing answers, but rather about collaboratively uncovering the answers that already exist within you. It's a journey of self-exploration, helping to unravel the intricacies of thoughts and emotions, and shining a light on the unseen aspects of your inner world.

I will support you in understanding what might lie underneath your difficulties and together we will identify strategies to help you  move forward.
Your challenges can become opportunities for growth, an opportunity to journey towards self-acceptance. My intention is to create a space for you where  you can find this acceptance and cultivate a relationship with yourself where all parts of you are welcomed, understood and allowed to be there.

If you resonate with my approach and find yourself  grappling with a challenging situation, persistent unhelpful behavior patterns, trauma, depression, ongoing anxiety, or a feeling of inner imbalance, engaging in  counseling could be a valuable step toward improving your well-being.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I welcome a 15 minute free phone conversation, which allows us to connect and for you to determine whether you feel comfortable to engage with me.
